Kingman Yacht Center Releases 2012 Event Schedule

Kingman Yacht Center of Cataumet, Massachusetts, has a host of fun, exciting events—many of them free—planned for 2012.

From free boat-in movie showings to fishing tournaments to sailing races, the popular full-service marina on Red Brook Harbor (home of the Chart Room Restaurant) makes a great daytrip, weekend getaway or seasonal home.

Here is a calendar of boating events that are open to the public:

February 24: 3rd Annual Northeast Big-Game Bash

  • Learn how to catch the big ones from some of the top pros in the fishing world. Two days of seminars and fishing info. Advance reservations are required.

May 17: The Chart Room opens for the 2012 season!

June 29: 50/50 Friday Fuel Sale

  • Purchase 50 gallons or more of gas or diesel at the KYC Fuel Dock and get 50 cents off per gallon. Service by number only, get your number by calling the Kingman Fuel Dock on VHF 71 or (508-563-7136 X101) then monitor VHF 71 on 50/50 Friday and listen for your number. No walk-pps, please.

June 30: Free Saturday Nite Boat-In Movie

  • 9:00 p.m.—11:00 p.m.: An old-fashioned drive-in movie just the way you remember them—only wetter. The movie is projected onto the wall of the big shed facing the front docks. Watch from your boat, or bring a chair to the “lawn” in front of the shed. Tune your radio to 90.3 FM for the stereo soundtrack.

July 4: Annual July 4th Boat Parade

  • As many as 20 boats have participated each year, many adorned in patriotic splendor. A great time for participants and spectators alike. Cash prizes are awarded for best-dressed boat in a number of categories.

July 4: 1st Annual KYC Cardboard Boat Race

  • Open to all kids 16 and under. There will be 2 groups of racers: kids only and kids racing with an adult. Design and build a boat entirely made from cardboard and duct tape. KYC will provide the cardboard. Boats may be built at home prior to the race day, but subject to inspection by the KYC cardboard marine design inspector, yet to be named. Boats can only be propelled by the use of muscle power, sail, paddlewheels. The propulsion system and or steering system (rudder) may be made of materials other than cardboard but must not contribute to the boat’s structural rigidity. Decorations such a flags and banners may also be materials other than cardboard.

July 10: Share the Waterways

  • Parker’s Boatyard: Started by Raz Parker years ago, Share the Waterways benefits Boston’s Crossroads for Kids by getting inner-city kids on the water—many for the first time in their lives. Last year’s event brought 123 kids, plus advisors and volunteers, onto Buzzards Bay, returning after a couple of hours to a BBQ lunch at Parker’s.

July 21: Saturday Nite Boat-In Movie

July 27: 15th Annual BassAckwards Weekend

  • All sailors are invited to participate in this fun race from Red Brook Harbor to Cleveland Ledge Light and back.

August 10: 50/50 Friday Fuel Sale

August 11: Saturday Nite Boat-In Movie

August 24-25: 3rd Annual KYC Big Game Tournament

  • A 2-day, offshore fishing tournament. Last year’s winner, WaveGuide, and Captain Rob are looking for some “reel” competition this year.
