New Bedford, Massachusetts Mayor Jon Mitchell is travelling to Washington D.C. this week where he is expected to voice concerns about an underwater marine monument off the coast of Cape Cod, according to an article on SouthCoastToday.com.

Former President Obama created the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument in 2016. The monument spans nearly 5,000 square miles 150 miles off Cape Cod, and it was hailed by environmentalists for preserving enormous underwater mountains and vast, deep canyons only now being explored. Remotely operated vehicles have sent back images of incredible life forms and geological features.

Mitchell plans to testify before Congress about the concerns of the fishing community, who voiced opposition to the monument.
