2018 MA Minke Whale Deaths Rise to 11

Cape Cod Times: A young adult minke whale carcass washed up [Tuesday Oct. 2] on a rocky shoreline in Marshfield, the 11th death of the species this year in Massachusetts waters, including 5 deaths off Cape Cod, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries.

Preliminarily, the cause of death for several of the minkes appears related to human interactions or infectious disease, but more research is needed, said Jennifer Goebel, spokeswoman for NOAA Fisheries Greater Atlantic Region. More specifically, the human interactions appear related to fishing gear entanglement, said Regina Asmutis-Silvia with Whale and Dolphin Conservation, which has an office in Plymouth.
