MA Resident Wins Award for Stellwagen Whale Research
June 1, 2012
Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, resident Ron Armonath is the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation‘s 2012 Volunteer of the Year for spearheading a project that helps keep whales safe from passing ships. He will be recognized with fellow honorees President Bill Clinton and Capt. Don Walsh at NMSF’s 2012 Leadership Awards Dinner on June 5 in Washington.
Armonath’s volunteer project in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary collects information on boat routes from local whale watching ships that is used to direct vessel traffic around the marine mammals that call the sanctuary home. The findings are used to craft policy and learn more about underwater acoustics. The research is only one of its type on the East Coast.
Armonath has been volunteering with the sanctuary since 2004.
