Fishermen to Comment on Proposed Tuna Regs
March 23, 2011
Fishermen in Maine and Massachusetts will get an opportunity to voice their opinions on proposed regulations that Maine U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree says could put Northeast tuna fishermen out of business.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NMFS) has scheduled a series of hearings on the proposed bluefin regulations, according to a story in the Portland Press Herald. One is currently scheduled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, for April 1. Pingree says the federal government will also hold a hearing in Portland, most likely in mid-April.
NMFS is considering a reduction to the U.S. Atlantic bluefin tuna quota, among other options. Pingree has been critical of the Obama administration for considering putting bluefins on the Endangered Species List.
