This Monday, removal of the Veazie Dam began on Maine’s Penobscot River. This is the second major dam removal on the river – communities celebrated the removal of Great Works Dam last summer.

The Penobscot is the largest dam removal and river restoration effort in the country, in terms of restoring access to habitat. No other dam removal project has restored access to more miles of habitat.

American Rivers has been a key partner in the project for more than a decade and we lead efforts on dam removals across the Northeast and the nation, so can provide a regional and national perspective.
