This week, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced Maine was one of 11 states awarded federal boating grant money as part of an effort to help fund construction of docks, boat slips, and other facilities to support recreational boating.

The Maine Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the town of Kittery and the Kittery Port Authority, will receive $242,766 in grant money — and will match that amount with $90,000 — to build a pier, ramp and float system that will create new dock space for 12 transient boats.

In all, the federal government awarded $13.5 in competitive grants for 16 boating infrastructure projects throughout the country.
