The Ellsworth American reports that in early December 2014, the Eastern Maine Skippers Program held a “green crab exploration event” at the Maine Maritime Academy.

During the event, 55 students from high schools around the area took part in a hands-on exploration of the state’s green crab invasion, during which they invented new trap designs, created plans for an emerging market for green crabs, explored ways to incorporate green crabs into different foods and considered ways to manage the crab population through science.

Green crabs, an invasive species, have been spreading steadily northward, posing threats to Maine’s softshell clam fishery.
