Man Rescued After Falling off Hyannis Ferry

A male passenger aboard the ferry MV Gay Head was rescued Saturday night after falling overboard in Hyannis Channel on the ferry’s return trip from Nantucket. The man as spotted by the alert crew of the outbound Hy-Line ferry, Grey Lady IV.

The man was first reported as missing when his unattended car was discovered on the MV Gay Head. After a search of the vessel failed to turn up any sign of the passenger, the Coast Guard, the Hyannis Fire Dept. and other vessels in the area were alerted.

As the Hy-Line ferry Grey Lady was leaving Hyannis, a crewmember heard what he thought was a faint cry for help, and consequently discovered a person in the water. A Jason’s Cradle was lowered to the unidentified man and he was hauled aboard. He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, but no injuries were reported.

It was estimated that the man had been in the water for about 25 minutes. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
