Merrimack Warning Light Outage Prompts Warning to Boaters
September 17, 2014
Newburyport News: All mariners heading into the Atlantic Ocean beyond the Merrimack River are being asked to contact the Coast Guard due to the outage of a warning light at the mouth of the river.
Located on the north jetty, the bar guide light normally illuminates in advance of adverse weather conditions, but the remote activation switch operated by the Newburyport Coast Guard station became inoperable earlier this summer, interrupting the radio signal to the station.
“We have turned the light off because we do not want to send the wrong signal to mariners,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Simpson said. “Until we can get a permanent fix, we are asking all mariners to contact us at any point when they are leaving outbound.”
