Missing Sailboat Crew Found off New Jersey

The three-person crew of a 40-foot Beneteau sailboat named Dove that was reported missing early Saturday, Nov. 16, off Maine has been located safe and sound some 100 miles off New Jersey.

The Coast Guard launched a massive 2,700-square-mile search concentrated in New England after one of the Dove’s crew apparently made a brief and cryptic 911 cell phone call at 3:00 a.m. Saturday, during which the crewmember stated that the vessel was in distress.

The Coast Guard initially determined that the call came from a location 20 miles south of Mount Desert Island, although it’s unclear how that determination was made. The Dove had indeed departed on her southward journey from the John Williams Boat Co. in Mount Desert, although the exact date of that departure was unclear.
