New Bedford Unveils New S&R Boat

SouthCoastToday.com: [New Bedford] now has a search and rescue vessel that will allow it to respond to emergencies on Buzzards Bay when the weather is bad.

On Tuesday, city officials unveiled a 41’, former Coast Guard utility vessel it received for free through the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, Bureau of Forestry and Fire Control.

Mayor Jon Mitchell, during a press conference at the State Pier, said there is always the potential of risk with large numbers of people working or playing on the city’s harbor. He said last year there were 67 marine-related incidents, including distress calls, fires and oil spills.
