New Boat: Seaway 24 Sport Center Console
By Tom Richardson on May 31, 2016
Seaway’s award-winning 24 Sport Center Console is a roomy boat with an attractive price whose open spaces adapt well to multiple uses.
The 29” wide console offers plenty of room for a 10” multifunction electronics display and VHF radio. Fishing is an obvious use, with multiple spaces for rod storage under the port gunwale, on either side of the console, and in the 6 gunwale-mounted holders. Outfit the helm with a leaning post/rocket launcher in lieu of the standard seat and there’s room for even more rods.
The cockpit can easily hold a portable live well or folding chairs for a sunset cruise. The cushioned 60” storage box fixed fore-and-aft in front of the console provides plenty of forward seating and cavernous storage, while the forepeak holds an anchor, chain and rode. The console face has a door leading to a portable toilet with 52” of headroom. It would be handy, though, to fit the space with a pump-out, a light, a vent with blower, other head necessities, and a handle on the after end of the storage box for easy entry and exit.
Our sea trial showed the hard-chine hull’s excellent manners and efficiency. With a Yamaha F150, the 24 Sport cruises efficiently at 12 to 28 mph, an unusually wide range that allows the skipper to adapt to a wide range of seas, and there is still plenty of power for casual tow sports. Look carefully at the boat’s construction details and you’ll find that it’s built to last.
