New Break Opens in Chatham Barrier Beach
April 7, 2017
A new break in the barrier beach just south of Chatham Light that occurred over the winter may cause both benefits and headaches for boaters this season.
The new inlet occurred along South Beach, about ½-mile south of the lighthouse and adjacent to the existing inlet to Chatham Harbor. If the inlet remains open, it could offer a more direct route to the open Atlantic from Outermost Harbor Marina and boaters launching from Stage Harbor or heading east from Nantucket Sound.
On the negative side, the break could divert some of the energy of the tides flowing in and out of Chatham Harbor. This could allow sand to accumulate in the older inlet, making it a more dangerous passage for boaters and commercial fishermen.
