New Destroyer Departs Maine

A new Navy destroyer built at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, sailed down the Kennebec River on Wednesday, September 5, under stormy skies. The ship is now heading toward the open ocean and a commissioning ceremony in New York City set for October 6.

The Aegis destroyer, named the DDG-112 Michael Murphy, was christened in May 2011, but the ship remained in Maine for additional prep work that had been requested by the Navy.

Many thanks to Fred Hill, who sent us the accompanying photos of the ship as it passed Popham Beach.
