New England Boating TV: Newport, RI
October 20, 2014
Join co-hosts Parker Kelley and Tom Richardson as they explore the waters in and around the celebrated boating mecca of Newport, Rhode Island—and meet all sorts of colorful characters along the way.
Among the many stops is the Newport Maritime Center, where Tom chats with harbormaster Tim Mills about this great public boating facility just off Thames Street. The crew also visits the Newport Shipyard for an interview with owner Charlie Dana, a dock-and-dine lunch at Belle’s Café and a glimpse at the Alvimedica—the high-tech Volvo Ocean Race sailboat capable of reaching speeds of 50 mph.
Later, Parker checks in with Terry Nathan of the IYRS School of Trade & Technology, who describes the incredible boat-restoration work and marine-trades training that’s being done at this Thames Street facility.
Other highlights include a personal tour of the inner harbor aboard a Hinckley yacht, a fancy lawn party at the Castle Hill Inn, sailing with the folks at SailNewport and a tour of historic Fort Adams.
Oh, and there’s fishing action, too! Parker and Tom team up with Al and Christine Elson of Striper Marina and local guide Dave Monti to target big fluke near the Newport Bridge aboard the Elsons’ Pursuit C310. Do they score? You’ll have to watch the episode to find out!
