New Woods Hole Exhibit Features Deep Sea “Black Smoker”

Cape Cod Times: Visitors to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Ocean Science Exhibit Center can now get a close up view of a part of the ocean floor its scientists have devoted decades to studying, but could only see using a deep-sea sub.

The exhibit center at 15 School St. is home to a new exhibit that depicts a “black smoker” hydrothermal vent in the Galapagos Rift, 8,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The 10-foot-by-10-foot display was commissioned by the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, but has found a new, permanent home at WHOI.
