NH Boat Museum Offers 2015 Youth Boatbuilding Class
July 5, 2015
Space is still available in the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Youth Boat Building Program in Wolfeboro, NH. The course runs Monday – Friday, August 3-15 from 9:00 – 3:00. The program is available for boys and girls ages 12 and up. During the course, students will make their own boat, which will be theirs to take home and use.
Thanks to contributions from a number of donors, scholarships are available for students in the Youth Program to make the one-person canoe. The scholarships are for youth who might not otherwise be able to participate due to financial considerations.
The boats, which Museum volunteers start for the students over the winter, are made from kits. Participants have the choice of building for the youth course any of the following:
- One-person canoe
- One-person kayak
- 11′ 6″ Bevin’s Skiff
Costs vary, depending on the boat chosen and current Museum members get a discount.
In each class participants are taught the safe use of hand tools and small power tools by expert instructors, with plenty of individual assistance by volunteers. All materials and tools are supplied. Through hard work and the help of volunteers, participants will create their own beautiful finished boat.
A unique component of the Youth Boat Building Program is the Launch Day Party. On the final day of class, families are invited to a picnic at the Museum. Certificates of completion are awarded to the boat builders and then the boats are taken to Albee Beach for their official launch.
