Northport Regatta Raises $28K for Make-A-Wish One hundred sailors in 80 boats gathered at the Northport Yacht Club to take part in a series of races in the 17th annual Make-A-Wish junior sailing regatta last Friday (July 27).

“It’s enjoyable for me to run the event because I hope whoever needs a wish can get one granted,” Chairman Bob Doherty said. “That’s why we run the event. When the kids get their wishes, it may be the only time that the kids can temporarily forget about their illnesses.”

His daughter Keara, who is 14, took to the water with determination. Her fundraising efforts totaled over $7,300 of the $28,950 donated. It was the most money that Doherty has been able to raise in the 6 years that she has participated in the regatta. “This year’s event had special meaning for me because my friend had heart issues his whole life,” she said. “He passed away this year at 16. I would like to see kids like Matt get their wishes granted.”
