Norwalk, CT, Kayak-Safety Workshops

A series of free paddling-safety workshops will be held this week as part of the Kayak and Canoe Safety Awareness Week in Norwalk, Connecticut.
David W. Park, a Norwalk resident and kayaker, was quoted on TheHour.com as saying that several accidents over the last several years prompted him to organize the safety week, which will include participation by organizations and businesses that are involved with boating and boating safety.
The list of events includes:
- Wednesday, May 25, 6:30 p.m.: The Small Boat Shop will demonstrate the proper use of basic safety equipment, appropriate use of different types of boats and in-water capsize rescue techniques at the shop’s docks at 144 Water St. in South Norwalk,
- Thursday, May 26, 6:00 p.m.: The Outdoor Sports Center of Wilton will conduct a free safety presentation and provide similar demonstrations related to boating safety. The event will take place at the Norwalk Sailing School at Calf Pasture Beach.
- Saturday, May 28 & Sunday, May 29: Volunteers from several organizations will be at Norwalk’s Calf Pasture Beach Boat Launch to hand out free Coast Guard “Operation Paddle Smart” literature to paddlers.
- Saturday, May 28, 10:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.: The Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct free, voluntary vessel safety checks at the Calf Pasture Beach Boat Launch. Inspections also will be available during the week by appointment.
