A pilot whale became stranded on Front Beach in Rockport, MA, on Sunday, Oct. 4, according to the Gloucester Times. The whale was first noticed at around 11:30 a.m. after it stranded itself at high tide. The animal was apparently unable to break through the high surf and swim out to deeper water. Bystanders helped the whale back out to sea, but it later beached again.

Marine mammal rescue organizations were contacted, but were not able to respond. At 5:00 p.m., the whale was reported to be on the rocks near the beach.
