Plum Island, MA, Lighthouse Tour This Weekend

An open house tour of the historic 1788 Plum Island lighthouse in Newburyport, MA, will be held Sunday, Aug. 19.

A climb to the top of the historic light offers incredible views of both land and sea, from the Isles of Shoals and Mt. Agamenticus to the Great Salt Marsh and Cape Ann. The lighthouse also offers views of the boating traffic at the mouth of the Merrimack River and down to the city of Newburyport. And learn about the history of Plum Island lights that have guarded the Merrimack River entrance since 1788.

The open house runs from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Attendees should be aware that they must ascend a short ladder at the top of the lighthouse through a trap door to emerge at the viewing platform. To climb the tower, children must be at least 5 years old and 42 inches tall. Tours are weather dependent. There is no charge, but donations are appreciated.

The lighthouse is at 265 Northern Blvd., on the northern tip of Plum Island.
