Public Meeting to Discuss Sakonnet River Closure

The Coast Guard has scheduled a public meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, at Tiverton High School in Tiverton, Rhode Island, to discuss the upcoming waterway closure of portions of the Sakonnet River.

Members from Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England will receive comments on potential impacts to vessels and businesses during construction of the new Route 24 bridge over the main waterway channel spanning the Sakonnet River between Portsmouth and Tiverton.

To accommodate this construction, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has requested a limitation be placed on vessel traffic in the main channel beneath the bridge for a period of 30 days. This 30-day period is tentatively set to begin August 29.

A temporary channel will be established to allow most vessels to transit safely during daylight hours through this period.

Specific potential waterway restrictions and accommodations will be discussed at this public meeting, followed by comments from the public.

The address for Tiverton High School is 100 North Brayton Road, Riverton, R.I. 02878.
