RI Boating Certification Help
March 14, 2015
If you are a resident of Rhode Island who was born after January 1, 1986, you must be certified in order to operate a vessel with a motor exceeding 10-hp. Certification is also required for anyone who wishes to operate a personal watercraft (eg., Jet Ski), regardless of age.
To become certified, boaters can take one of the classroom courses held throughout the year at various locations by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadron. State-approved courses are also available through U.S. Sailing, BOATWISE, Confident Captain and Boat Coach USA.
Any boating safety class must be a minimum of 8 hours and be NASBLA-certified. Check with the instructor to verify that your class is state-certified and meets the above requirements.
A home study course is also available through the RI Division of Law Enforcement at (401) 222-2284 or (401) 222-3070.
