Career day at the IYRS is coming up.
Career day at the IYRS is coming up.

The 11th Annual Marine & Composites Industry Career Day will be held in Newport, RI, this Saturday, April 2. The event is a one-stop shop for individuals interested in working in the marine or composites industries. According to the American Composites Manufacturers Association, the U.S. composites industry is projected to grow an average of 6.5% between now and 2020.

Hosted by the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA) and IYRS School of Technology and Trades, Career Day takes place on Saturday, April 2 at the IYRS Newport Campus (449 Thames Street, Newport, R.I.). The event is free and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with breakout sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Over 30 companies from as far afield as Maine and Florida are expected to attend, including boatbuilders, marinas and boatyards, schools and training institutions, and composites companies that work in marine and non-marine sectors such as aerospace, transportation, defense, and architecture. Attendees can network with companies, learn about job openings, attend seminars geared toward career-seekers, and talk to organizers of training programs that are proven pathways to jobs.

Event organizers encourage career-seekers at all levels to attend—including skilled tradesmen and -women, managerial talent, individuals skilled in trades that could translate to composites and the marine trades, and even those who are not yet skilled but are willing to learn.

Several training programs will be represented at the event, including the RIMTA Marine & Composites Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program—a 7-week course supported by the Governor’s Workforce Board that is free to Rhode Islanders and a popular source for entry-level workers. Attendees can also see the IYRS facility, meet the school’s staff, and learn about the IYRS programs in Boatbuilding & Restoration, Marine Systems, and Composites Technology; many companies attending Career Day come with the express goal of meeting IYRS students ready to begin their careers.

Doors to Career Day open at 10:00 am, but 2 valuable breakout sessions are slated prior to the event’s opening:

  • 9:00 a.m.: “Navigating Your Job Search” with Neal Harrell, President, Brooks Marine Group
  • 9:30 a.m.: “What Brewer Yacht Yards Look for in a Candidate” with Rives Potts, President/COO, Brewer Yacht Yards
