The 5 1/2-inch soft-plastic Zoom Fluke is one of the best baits for false albacore. The action and profile of this lure as it’s twitched across or just below the surface often prove irresistible to albies (as well as bonito), especially when they are feeding on small bait.
One advantage of the Fluke over similar soft-plastics, such as the Slug-Go, is that it’s a slightly heavier, providing a bit more casting distance. Plus it has a belly cavity that hides the hook point and prevents it from picking up weeds.
While the Zoom Fluke can be fished on a leadhead jig to get it deep, it’s usually more effective when rigged “weedless” on a 3/0 VMC wide-gap worm hook and fished on or near the surface. The VMC hooks are very sharp and seem to hook more fish than traditional worm hooks, which have a longer shank and narrower gap. Here’s how to get it done!
