Right Whales Return to Cape Cod Bay

Right whales have returned to Cape Cod Bay, and April is the best time to see them. Researchers have identified about 60 individuals—“a spot-on number for this time of year,” according to the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, which monitors marine mammal populations in the local waters.

On Monday, March 18, PCCS teams located 15 right whales in Cape Cod Bay with 3 off North Truro, 2 of which were skim and subsurface feeding. Also spotted were 5 fin whales and 4 minke whales.

On the afternoon of March 21, residents posted to Provincetown Community Space that a small group of 7 to 8 right whales were close to shore, traveling from Herring Cove to Race Point. They were in a surface active group, which basically means they were socializing.
