Rising Seas Threaten Cape Cod Groundwater
March 4, 2014
A recent article on EcoRI.org examines the often overlooked impact of rising sea levels on groundwater, which could have a major impact on Cape Cod’s wastewater systems.
As the sea level rises, the water table will rise as well. Since freshwater is less dense than saltwater, Cape Cod’s groundwater floats on top of the surrounding seawater in a kind of lens. If the water table rises, its surface will be closer to the surface of the land, which could have serious implications for septic systems.
