SailMaine Announces 420 Fundraising Drive
April 21, 2011
SailMaine, a non-profit organization that supports sailing in Maine at the grassroots, community level, has kicked off a Capital Campaign in order to purchase a fleet of 420 sailing dinghies. The fleet would allow SailMaine to continue to grow programs for both beginners and competitive high school teams.
SailMaine is southern Maine’s only community sailing organization, and is open to all people interested in sailing or learning to sail. SailMaine programs provide Casco Bay-area schools with a competitive spring and fall high school racing program that serves 150 high school students each year. The racing program has been growing over several years, and the current fleet needs updating, say SailMaine officials.
“Our boats get a lot of use, but that’s exactly as it should be in a community sailing program. Every 5 years or so we have to upgrade our fleet to keep up with demand,” said Jeff Cumming, Executive Director of SailMaine. Several hundred more children and adults use the same fleet of 420s in SailMaine’s summer programs. Last year, the Casco Bay community logged over 30,000 hours on the water through SailMaine programs.
