Sailor and Internet Pioneer Donates to Newport Marine Charities
March 20, 2011
An internet pioneer and avid sailor who once promised to donate to marine charities if he ever hired professional sailors to race with him has made good on his word.
According to an article on YachtingWorld.com, Yachtsman Jim Clark — an internet pioneer and co-founder of Netscape Communications — has donated $150,000 each to two Newport, Rhode Island-based marine charities, Sail Newport and Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island.
The donations are follow-throughs on Clark’s public pledge to contribute to marine charities if he ever hired professional sailors to race in pursuit of a trophy. Clark competes in regattas with his 137-foot J-class yacht Hanuman. He recently announced plans to integrate the Newport-based PUMA Ocean Racing Team and helmsman Ken Read into his amateur team.
