Salem, MA, Gets New Harbormaster

Salem News: It will be a new era on the waterfront next week when a civilian becomes harbormaster. Bill McHugh, a Marblehead resident, takes over July 15 from police Sgt. Peter Gifford, who has held the post since 2000.

McHugh, who will be paid $64,000, will come aboard as the Salem Police Superior Officers Union decides whether to continue its legal challenge over the hiring of a civilian.

The union filed a grievance in May, which was rejected by both police Chief Paul Tucker and, on appeal, by Mayor Kim Driscoll.
