Salem, MA, Welcomes First International Cruise Ship
October 27, 2014
Salem News: Deep water and high culture — along with a generous offering of witches and goblins — has attracted the first international cruise ship to the dock that previously hosted vessels bringing coal to the Salem Power Plant. The Seabourne Quest discharged more than 200 people on Sunday (Oct. 19) for a day of exploring.
The 650’ Quest is classified as a “mid-sized cruise ship.” It’s a little smaller than the massive coal ships that used to dock at the plant, but sits higher in the water, according to pilot Thom Evans, and is the biggest cruise ship ever to visit Salem. The Quest is a state of the art vessel with “all the bells and whistles,” said Evans. He took his place on the bridge to bring her in at 8:00 a.m. and, while mindful of 20 knot winds, found it smooth sailing.
