Saving Sea Turtles at the Shipyard
December 7, 2010
The Cape Cod Times reports on the New England Aquarium’s new 23,000-square-foot facility in the Fore River Shipyard. The building, a former pipe plant for large ships, was reborn as the NEA’s Animal Rescue Center just 6 weeks ago. Just in time, it turns out, as this year will likely break records for the number of endangered sea turtles suffering from the effects of cold air and frigid water temperatures.
One hundred and thirty eight cold-stunned sea turtles have been rescued from Cape Cod beaches so far this season, and more are likely to follow. The new NEA facility features giant saltwater tanks where the turtles can recover. In the summer, many will be released.
