Scientists to Study Merrimack Jetty Design
June 25, 2012
Newburyport News: Would it be beneficial to move, or shorten, or lengthen the enormous stone jetties at the mouth of the Merrimack River?
That’s something the Army Corps of Engineers plans to delve into with the help of a highly detailed computer model.
Perhaps later this year, depending upon when the estimated $1.5 million in needed funding is available, computer models will be developed that reflect the complex currents, tides, channels, eddies, obstructions and topography of the area around the river mouth. What the corps is hoping to find is whether there is a better design for the jetties.
