Search Renewed for Cook’s Ship “Endeavor”
September 22, 2018
Archaeologists have relaunched the search for Capt. James Cook’s ship HMS Endeavour, which is thought to lie at the bottom of Newport Harbor, RI.
Members of the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) and the Australian National Maritime Museum contend that they’re closing in on the wreck.
The British ship, which played a key role in many discoveries when Cook sailed her around the globe, was eventually used to transport Hessian soldiers during the Revolutionary War. The British scuttled the Endeavor, along with 12 other transport ships, in 1778 in Newport Harbor to form a barrier to approaching vessels.
