Shark Detection Buoy Installed off Mattapoisett, MA

The Mattapoisett, MA, harbormaster’s office has installed an acoustic-detection buoy off Angelica Point that could pick up signals emitted by the sonic tags placed on some great white sharks.

According to SouthCoast Today, Mattapoisett summer visitor Elizabeth Gilman donated the new buoy through her company, Gilman Corp. of Connecticut, which makes Coast Guard buoys.

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries provided the hardware and electronics for the buoy, which is located close to the scene of the last fatal shark attack in state waters. That attack took place in 1936.
