Southport Boats has introduced the brand-new 33 FE (Family Edition), the first all-new model since the company’s acquisition from its founders and subsequent move to Augusta, Maine. Like its predecessors, the newest Southport was designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates is a center console with a variable-deadrise, deep-V hull powered by twin 4-stroke outboards. From her graceful, subtly raised sheerline and clipper bow to the tumblehome transom, the 33 FE is elegant and comfortable, but also quick, seaworthy, and efficient.

While the boat is fishy enough, featuring a live well in the transom, tackle drawers in the helm seat, and fishboxes port and starboard in her sole, it also has a freshwater marine head, solid-surface countertop, and double bunk in her console, plus a U-shaped dinette with table in the bow that converts to a sun lounge. In other words, plenty of creature comforts to keep the whole family happy.

Since Southport Boats is now a sister company to Kenway Corporation, which

offers custom fiberglass and composite design, engineering and manufacturing services to a wide range of industries, it’s no surprise that the 33 FE and her sisters benefit from cutting-edge materials and sophisticated resin-infusion systems. Thus, our test boat was light enough to perform exceptionally well with Yamaha’s 300-hp 4.2-liter V-6 outboards (50 mph top end, with good fuel economy at 27-33 mph cruising speeds), but strong enough to run high, level, dry and soft through sloppy seas. It’s clearly a boat that will provide lots of family fun and adventure over many seasons.
