Special Moment for Whaleship Morgan, New Bedford
June 30, 2014
As the restored whaleship Charles W. Morgan sailed into its former home port of New Bedford, Massachusetts, for the first time in more than 7 decades on June 25, 2014, it was an obvious moment of pride for those at Mystic Seaport who had worked so long to restore the historic vessel.
But it was also a moment of pride and personal connection for the citizens of New Bedford — the one-time whaling capital of the world — as evidenced by the crowds lining the city’s shoreline to welcome the Morgan back as it arrived.
“To sail into New Bedford Harbor on a whaling vessel, to me it gives me goosebumps,” said New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell. “I know it causes everyone in the city to swell with pride.”
