Students Learn Lessons On 5-Day Sailing Trip

Seventh-grade students from Block Island, Rhode Island, and nearby Fishers Island, New York, recently exchanged their classrooms for a 5-day excursion along the coast of Martha’s Vineyard aboard the topsail schooner Shenandoah.

According to an article in the Block Island Times, the Black Dog Tall Ships Company organized the program with the objective of teaching kids the old ways of fixing, sailing and taking care of older-model ships. Students helped the crew in daily projects and jobs such as knot-tying and hoisting sails.
