Study Examines Fish Health in Lower Mystic River
August 26, 2013
Thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, the Conservation Law Foundation says it will work with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to determine if the fish in Massachusetts’ Lower Mystic River is safe to catch and eat.
According to the Conservation Law Foundation, the Boston Harbor Fish Advisory hasn’t been updated since 1988 and was based on sampling from Quincy Bay, raising questions whether it is adequate for the present-day Lower Mystic River. They suspect the lack of specific, accurate, and reliable information for the residents of the Lower Mystic has likely resulted both in consumption of fish that is unsafe for human health and an overall underutilization of a valuable river resource.
