Sturgeon Status May Affect Fishermen
May 1, 2012
CapeCodOnline: The health of the ancient Atlantic sturgeon has emerged as the latest threat to the future of New England’s fishing industry.
On Wednesday [April 25], regional fishery managers considered the implications of protecting sturgeon off New England, 2 months after federal officials listed sturgeon in the Gulf of Maine as “threatened.”
Under the listing, tough restrictions such as closing areas to fishing can be enacted if regulators determine fishing jeopardizes the species’ continued existence.
