Tiny Research Boat from Maine Recovered in Ireland
November 28, 2017
A 5’ unmanned sailboat launched last June by students from the Swan’s Island School on Swans Island, Maine, has been recovered on the west coast of Ireland, near the village of Doolin in County Clare.
The boat, named Black Rock, was found on Nov. 9 by 3 doctoral students with the Mobile & Marine Robotics Research Center at the University of Limerick.
The Swan’s Island students had launched the boat as part of a program established by Educational Passages, which helps students learn about ocean currents and the marine environment. In 2017, Educational Passages provided 34 boats to classrooms in 7 different countries.
The boats are equipped with GPS tracking devices, and were launched along the East Coast to be carried by the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Drift currents to Europe.
