EPISODE 9: Wareham, MA

In this episode of New England Boating TV, co-hosts Parker Kelley and Tom Richardson visit Wareham, Massachusetts, a hidden gem of a boater’s destination in Upper Buzzards Bay. Wareham, which celebrated its 275th Anniversary in 2014, has more coastline than any other Bay State town, and comprises Onset Bay, the Wareham River, the Weweantic River and Little Harbor.

There’s no shortage of great places to discover, both on and off the water. Among the highlights is a tour of Onset Bay and Village with Alan Slavin, an avid local boater and town selectman. Slavin, along with Wareham Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, show Parker and Tom all of the local marine facilities, including the Stonebridge Marina, Onset Bay Marina, the Point Independence Yacht Club and the Town Pier, which offers short-term tie-up and overnight moorings, along with launch service.

On shore, Slavin takes Parker on a tour of the Village, pointing out some of Onset’s historic Victorian buildings and homes, as well as the local restaurants, including Marc Anthony’s Pizzeria. Later, Parker checks out the Stonebridge Bar & Grill overlooking the bay and does some cooking with head chef Justin Hadley. She also takes a scenic kayak paddle on Sunset Cove with the folks at Nemasket Kayak and learns how oysters are being grown at a Wareham aquaculture operation.

But there’s more to Wareham than Onset Bay. Tom visits Zecco Marina on the Wareham River and provides a brief look at nearby Wareham Center. He also stops by Beetle Cat, Inc., which continues to build classic wooden sailboats from its shop in Wareham.

As many anglers already know, Wareham also offers some great fishing opportunities, and Tom and Parker take time to search for false albacore in the open waters of Buzzards Bay. Do they find the fish? Tune in and see!
