Cape Cod Times: The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and Fisheries announced Friday [Aug. 25] that the agency, along with its Canadian partner, has launched an investigation into the recent deaths of the critically injured North Atlantic right whales.

Since April, 13 right whales have been found dead off Cape Cod and Canada.

“Thirteen animals is a lot of animals when you’re talking about a population of less than 500,” Sean Hayes, protected species branch chief at NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, said in a conference call with other officials Friday morning.
