Unmanned Boat Corralled on Waquoit Bay, MA

On Thursday, July 19, Barnstable County sheriff’s deputies had to corral a runaway boat in Cape Cod’s Waquoit Bay when the vessel’s 2 teenage operators were thrown overboard.

The Sheriff’s Dept. received a call at around 4:00 p.m. that 2 juveniles had been thrown from their Carolina Skiff while towing 2 friends in a water-tube, according to a Sheriff’s Department statement. Their boat was “careening in dangerous circles,” according to the statement.

One of the deputies was eventually able to jump aboard the boat and kill the engine.

No serious injuries were reported, but the incident stands as a reminder that all boat operators should always wear a kill switch lanyard.
