A Navy veteran and a longtime volunteer on the USS Salem recently talked about the ship’s history and conversion in to a museum, according to an article on PatriotLedger.com.

The work to get the USS Salem ready for visitors began before the ship reached its new home on the banks of the Fore River in 1994, Arthur Milmore recalled.

The Salem had been part of the Navy’s mothball fleet for 35 years, and saplings were sprouting from between the boards of the ship’s teak deck.
