Westport River Nitrogen Levels May Prompt Lawsuit
May 4, 2017
SouthCoast Today: The Buzzards Bay Coalition and Westport Fishermen’s Association plan to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this summer if the agency fails to approve a nitrogen cleanup plan for the Westport River, coalition president Mark Rasmussen said Thursday [April 27].
The plan establishes how much nitrogen the river can handle and still meet water-quality standards, thus setting an agenda to remove the excess. An approved plan would make the watershed eligible for more state and federal grants to address sources of nitrogen—especially household wastewater.
