What to Expect at Newport Sailing Week

NewportNow.com has an excellent article on what you need to know about Newport Sailing Week, including a rundown on the various classes. Here’s an excerpt:

The event is modeled after the popular Bacardi Miami Sailing Week, which has become a big off-season draw for snowbirds looking to compete in this multi-class regatta.

This week’s regatta will bring competitors from as far away as Hong Kong and the U.K., in a 60+ boat fleet spread out over five classes of one-design racing.

Racing is scheduled for June 24-26, with the five participating one-design classes – Star, Audi Melges 20, Melges 24, Viper 640 and J/80 – sharing one course north of Newport’s Pell Bridge.

Celebrating the class’ 100th anniversary, the Star Class is making somewhat of a return to Narragansett Bay, as this will be the first time in recent memory that the class competes in the waters off Newport.
