Where to Anchor for Newport, RI, Fireworks
July 1, 2016
The Newport, RI, harbormaster’s department has issued a safety reminder to boaters who plan to attend this year’s Independence Day fireworks display at Fort Adams.
Fireworks in Newport will take place on Monday night, July 4, and will be shot from the north tip of Fort Adams. Boaters are invited to anchor west of Goat Island, outside of the harbor channel, but are urged to be aware of the 700’ security zone surrounding Fort Adams. The harbormaster will have 4 patrol boats in the harbor, and will also be accompanied by the Coast Guard. For any information regarding safety and security updates, monitor VHF channel 16.
The harbormaster is also reminding boaters that they are required to have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved lifejacket onboard for every passenger, and to test their navigation lights prior to the night of the fireworks to ensure sure they are functioning properly. After the fireworks are done, boaters should be aware of their speed and surroundings when navigating the harbor and the bay, as boat traffic is expected to be extremely busy.
