October 11, 20247 Tips for Fall Boating
If you think the end of summer means
the end of the boating season in New England, think again.
Sure, here in New England, those warm summer days seem to fly by all too quickly. But the end of summer doesn’t mean it’s time to send your boat into hibernation. In fact, with crisp, cool air, beautiful fall foliage, and no crowds on the water, autumn might be the best time of year for boating in New England.
Of course, with shorter days and colder water, fall boating presents unique challenges. Here are a few tips to help you be prepared to enjoy autumn boating.
Wear a PFD
Boaters should always wear a PFD. But it’s even more important when it’s cold. Autumn afternoons might be warm, but chilly nights mean the water gets cold. Wearing a PFD will help protect you from the initial shock if you go in the water. Some states even require a PFD in the fall.
Fuel Up
With the busy summer season behind them, some fuel docks might close in the fall. Don’t assume you can fill up at your destination. Fill your tank ahead of time and check the status of services where you’re headed.
Have Lights
Darkness comes earlier each day this time of year, and it can easily sneak up on boaters. Be prepared with a waterproof headlamp and/or flashlight. You should also make sure your navigational lights are working properly.
Watch the Weather
Autumn storms can form unexpectedly and bring strong rains, winds, and dramatic temperature drops. Keep an eye on the weather before and during your trip so you don’t get caught off guard.
Dress Appropriately
Fall days can have significant fluctuations in temperature and conditions. Dressing in layers will allow you to adapt if it gets warmer or cooler. Also bring rain gear and a change of clothes.
Have a Float Plan
Let someone know where you’ll be and when you expect to be back. At this time of year, if you do get in trouble on the water, time is of the essence. Download the USCG Float Plan
Bring a Warm Drink
Nothing hits the spot quite like a hot drink on a cold day. Bring a hot drink in a thermos if you don’t have a galley to prepare one.
